Frequently Asked Questions

WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM?

Scholarship Foundation of East Providence administers scholarships for businesses, local civic organizations and individuals. We receive memorial contributions and administer scholarships in memory of loved ones as well as donor-advised funds. We also hold events to raise funds for additional scholarships, such as our annual Phone-a-thon.

ARE CONTRIBUTIONS TAX DEDUCTIBLE?

Yes. Scholarship Foundation of East Providence is an independent 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization. Our Federal Tax I.D. is 23-7007104. Since we are a non-profit organization and all members are volunteers, you can be assured that 100% of your gift will be used for scholarships. Your check may be made payable to SF of East Providence and mailed to P.O. Box 154438, East Providence, RI  02915. For information on establishing a scholarship, contact Susan Allienello at sallienello@epschoolsri.com.

 HOW ARE RECIPIENTS SELECTED?

To ensure anonymity of selection, before applications are scored by selection committee members, names, addresses and other identifying information is blocked and an identification number is assigned to each applicant. Each member of the selection committee reviews and scores applications using a standard point scoring system. The resulting scores for each applicant are then averaged. Scores are ranked from highest to lowest, and scholarships are awarded in that order until all available funds are used. After all selections have been made, the names of the applicants are matched to the identification number of the application.

HOW MANY SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AWARDED EACH YEAR?

The number of scholarships awarded is determined by the amount of money available to distribute each year through fundraising efforts, grants and interest on investments. In 2022, Scholarship Foundation of East Providence awarded more than $205,000 to 137 East Providence residents.

HOW MUCH IS EACH SCHOLARSHIP?

Each student receives a scholarship package of at least $1,500. The package may consist of one $1,500 scholarship or of a number of smaller awards. We award some scholarships at higher amounts at the request of individual donors or to students who demonstrate greater financial need..

CAN I GET A RENEWABLE SCHOLARSHIP?

There are no renewals. Applicants must reapply each year.

WHEN DO I GET MY CHECK?

Scholarships for seniors are announced at Class Night exercises at East Providence High School. All other private school students and enrolled students are notified by mail. All scholarship recipients receive their first semester check in August. The second semester check is sent to recipients after proof of second semester enrollment has been received.
